Blogging, Gossip, and Technology

Saturday, September 22nd, 2007

Weblogs are a constantly developing medium, and as such, often take on a place in our culture in unusual ways. Each individual blogger chooses which direction they feel fit to explore. Sometimes a weblog can have a life of its own and take on a new direction that was not originally intended. A weblog can be used for strict news-based information, sometimes a gossip column, and often a public sort of digital diary.

With such a cultural phenomenon, it almost seems right that TV should latch on to weblogs. Recently, a show debuted called Gossip Girl on The CW. It involves the stories of some Upper East Side New York teenagers and there forays in to sex, drugs, and other common teenage issues. It also adds the opposing viewpoints of a couple of kids from completely different social and economic backgrounds for contrast.

What makes this series different from the rest, is that the narration and conflict or provided by the anonymous blogger known as “Gossip Girl”. No one knows who she is, but the subjects of her gossip weblogs stir the pot of the teenage community and often share intimate details of particular people’s lives.

The use of a blogger as a basis for the show is new territory. The show has even used widgets as part of their advertising campaign. (See above) The show pilot episode aired on 9/19 and it should be interesting to see how the public latches on to the use of a fairly new technological tool such as the weblog.

New GoldenTee 2008!

Saturday, September 22nd, 2007

The new Golden Tee 2008 game from ITS Games is here! 5 new courses, 5 ways to frustrate and annoy, or revel in the glory that is your game…

I am so happy the new game is out, I think this is one of the greatest bar games ever invented. I see people from the age of 21 to 71 playing the thing at all hours of the day. I only wish I had a franchise!

I anticipate a few lost hours in the next couple of weeks getting up to speed on the new courses.

Fantasy Football

Saturday, September 22nd, 2007

Ok, so where does Fantasy Football fit in to a blog about technology? Well, I remember back in the good old days of Fantasy Football when the commissioner of the league did all of the scoring by hand, and in turn, everyone in the league claimed their score was wrong.

Nowadays, all of the information and scoring is done automatically. The players scoring, injury and status can all be emailed or sent to your wireless phone. You can make trades, bench players, and change many options in real-time.

Does this change in technology make for a better experience? I don’t know. Does it make it different? It sure does.

Creating a brand

Saturday, September 22nd, 2007

Signage and branding is one of the most important aspects to growing your business. Most small businesses do not pay enough attention or money to this. Establishing your brand and enforcing your company through advertising can be a major influence to constant growth.

Take, for example, the real estate business. Each home must be brought to the immediate attention of prospective buyers. The more potential buyers there are, the higher the income on the sale. Signage is the most important part of this. Banners, real estate signs, and information boxes are the key to a successful marketing campaign. Look to your sign company to enable you to create and design your own advertising.

Keep advertising, signage and branding in mind in all that you do, and your company will see smoother and constant growth.
